Shag Thompson lived to almost 100 years old, after being born in 1893 in North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina in 1913, and was in the majors with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics at the tail end of the time when the $100,000 infield made them a dominant team. In 1915, he hit .333 in 33 at-bats.
He is not the only major leaguer born in Haw River, NC. Max Wilson was also born there.
