In January 2009, Sergio Mitre was suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball for a positive test for a banned substance. The California native said it was from an over-the-counter supplement he had purchased.
On May 10, 2010 ESPN Monday Night Baseball announcer Aaron Boone commented that while teammates with Sergio Mitre, opposing players routinely commented that Mitre's pitches were some of the most deceptive in the league.
