Pitcher Scott Elbert was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the 2004 amateur draft and made his pro debut that year with the Ogden Raptors, going 2-3 in 12 starts. He spent the next season with the Columbus Catfish and was 8-5 with a 2.66 ERA as a member of the team's rotation. He was 5-5 with a 2.37 ERA for the Vero Beach Dodgers in 2006, earning a spot on the Florida State League mid-season All-Star team before being promoted to the Jacksonville Suns, with whom he was 6-4 in 11 starts. However, he made just 3 starts for Jacksonville in 2007, going 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA.

Elbert made his major league debut for the Dodgers on August 29, 2008, pitching two-thirds of an inning and striking out to batters in a game in Arizona.
