Satoshi Komatsu was the 2008 Pacific League Rookie of the Year.
Komatsu pitched for JR Kyushu after finishing college. He pitched for Japan in the 2006 Asian Games. In the 2006 Haarlem Baseball Week, he went 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA, losing to the Dutch national team and beating Taiwan. He was picked by the Orix Buffaloes in the first round of the draft later that year.
In 2007, Komatsu was 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in eight relief appearances, striking out 13 in 10 2/3 IP. He had a huge year in 2008, going 15-3 for a team that was otherwise under .500; he had a 2.51 ERA and allowed 134 hits in 172 1/3 IP. He finished third in the Pacific League in ERA and wins, behind Hisashi Iwakuma and Yu Darvish in both categories. His 151 strikeouts placed him 5th. He was named Rookie of the Year that season, being a unanimous pick.
Komatsu was with Japan for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. He only appeared once for the tournament champs, striking out five in 2 2/3 scoreless relief innings. He allowed no hits and walked one.
