In 1965 the Kokutetsu Swallows were sold to the Sankei newspaper company. The team was renamed the Sankei Swallows that year and then changed names again, becoming the Sankei Atoms in 1966. The name have been derived from a TV show in Japan, Atom Boy. Late in 1968, the club was sold to the Yakult company, which was in the business of health drinks and the team became the Yakult Atoms after spending part of the 1969 season as the Atoms.
