San Francisco is located in California, on a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. It was heavily damaged by a massive earthquake in 1906 that was followed by fires whichtogether destroyed 80% of the city's buildings, but it recovered and is the state's second city today, after Los Angeles, CA, 380 miles to the south. Oakland, CA lies across the bay, to the east, and San Jose, CA is at the southern tip of the bay, 40 miles south-east. The three cities, along with numerous other cities in the vicinity, are considered to form a single metropolitan area.
San Francisco is home to San Francisco State University and the University of San Francisco.
