[edit] Biographical Information
Outfielder Sam Mele of the Scranton Red Sox led the Eastern League with a .342 batting average and 18 triples in 1946. The following year, he reached the majors with the Boston Red Sox. After being traded to the Washington Senators, he led the American League with 36 doubles in 1951.
In a ten year playing career, Mele reached double figures in home runs five times. He never appeared in a World Series as a player, but as a seven year manager, his 1965 Minnesota Twins team won 102 games and went to the Series, losing it only in the 7th game when Sandy Koufax beat Jim Kaat.
