[edit] Biographical Information
Sam Covington played three seasons in the majors, mostly as a first baseman. He also played at least 14 seasons in the minors.
He played for Tyler in 1912 and was still playing in the minors as late as 1927. The heart of his minor league career was spent with Indianapolis (1918-22).
He was one of the few major leaguers who played prior to the existence of the Federal League, and after the existence of the Federal League, but did not play major league baseball during the existence of the Federal League.
His brother Tex Covington was 7 years older, but since Sam broke into the majors at age 18, he came up only one year after Tex played his second year.
Both Sam and Tex were born in Henryville, TN and both died in Denison, TX. Sam lived more than 31 years after Tex died. They are the only two major leaguers (through 2008) who were born in Henryville, and the only two who died in Denison.
