Sam Shaw, a 5 ' 5 " pitcher, broke in with the 1888 Orioles, where he was a year older than Phenomenal Smith, and had an ERA a bit better than that of Smith.

When he came back at age 29 with the 1893 Colts, he was one of the oldest pitchers on a staff that averaged 25 years old.
