Sam McMackin pitched in the majors in September 1902. Less than six months later, he died of pneumonia.
The book Honus Wagner: The Life of Baseball's Flying Dutchman mentions a game in which McMackin pitched a two-hitter for Paterson against Hartford. Wagner got his hand stuck in his pocket somehow and couldn't get it out until the pocket was slit open with a knife.
The book Ed Barrow: The Bulldog Who Built the Yankees' First Dynasty says that McMackin pitched badly in a game for Paterson because he was drunk and Barrow suspended him for a few games. McMackin is described as one of the team's best pitchers.
