Sam Gentile appeared in eight games for the 1943 Boston Braves, going 1-for-4 with the bat and never playing in the field. Generally a .300 hitter in the minors, Gentile was an outfielder there.
Gentile was at St. John's University from 1935-38 and played in the Boston Red Sox minor league organization from 1937-42. He hit .392 in the Bi-State League in 1939.
In April 1943 he signed as a free agent with the Braves, and that same month he was playing in the majors. Thereafter, he was in the military, and came back in 1946 to play again in the minors.
Through the middle of 2009, eight major leaguers have been born in Charlestown, MA. All of them were born before 1886 except for Gentile, who was born there in 1916.
