Sam Field played only 12 games in the majors, but managed to do so with three teams in two leagues, the National Association and the new National League. He played mostly catcher.
His career may have been doomed by his .712 fielding percentage.
He was the brother of Jim Field. The only other major leaguer to die in Sinking Spring, PA, is Whitey Kurowski.
"Samuel J. Field, a Sinking Spring landlord, died to-day, aged 56. . . for 15 years (he) was one of the leading base ball players in this section of the country. He began his career as a player in Philadelphia in 1865, and was known as one of the best catchers of his time. . . he acquired fame in catching for 'Cherokee' Fisher. Later he was identified with the Actives, of Reading. Mr Field was a prominent fireman . . . for a period of years." - Sporting Life, Nov. 12, 1904
