[edit] Biographical Information
Sam Childs played one game in the majors and three seasons in the minors. He then became much more prominent as a doctor.
The History of Colorado, edited by Wilbur Fiske Stone, carries a biography of Childs. The biography does not mention his ballplaying days, although it is clearly the same man (for example, the text says he was born in East Hartford on November 5 (sic), 1861 as well as mentioning his time at Yale). Childs was the son of a prominent physician and attended high school in Hartford, CT. He then went to Yale University, graduating in 1883 and later getting his medical degree from NYU. In 1884-85 he also taught school in East Hartford. He was an intern in New York and then a physician and surgeon for a number of years in Connecticut before moving to Colorado for health reasons. He became an early expert in X-ray use, and was a professor of medicine at some schools in Colorado.
His son, Samuel Beresford Childs, Jr., also was a doctor.
The book Sketches of Colorado also has a biography, saying that Sam Childs played varsity baseball while at Yale.
