The Salem Redbirds played in Carolina League from 1981 to 1986. Previously known as the Salem Pirates, the Redbirds were first a San Diego Padres farm club and later became a Texas Rangers affiliate. During this time the Padres had another high-A affiliate in the Reno Padres so Reno got more of the talent, and the Rangers just didn't have enough talent. As a result, the Redbirds had only one winning season and no playoff appearances. Some of their most notable alumni include pitchers Kenny Rogers and Mitch Williams. After the 1986 season, they re-affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates and were renamed the Salem Buccaneers.
