The Salem Avalanche began play in the Carolina League in 1995, when the Salem Buccaneers moved to the new Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium and took on a new name. Originally a Colorado Rockies farm club, they were affiliated with the Houston Astros from 2003 to 2008. It was announced in September of 2008, that they will be a Boston Red Sox affiliate for 2009. In late November, the team announced a name change to the Salem Red Sox. The Avalanche made their only playoff appearance count, capturing the league championship in 2001.
