The son of Jeff Newman, Ryan Newman played three years in the minor leagues before becoming a coach. He was picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the 37th round of the 2000 amateur draft but did not sign. After college, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an undrafted free agent. He hit .198/.243/.208 for the 2002 Williamsport Crosscutters, with one extra-base hit (a double) in 106 AB. He mostly played second base there. In 2003, Ryan batted .190/.247/.190 in 50 games for the Hickory Crawdads as a utility infielder, playing 15-18 games at each infield position except first base. In a similar role in his final season, he batted .182/.229/.214 in 56 games for the Lynchburg Hillcats.

He coached the GCL Pirates in 2005 and was hitting coach for the Williamsport Crosscutters in 2006. Newman was named coach for the Hickory Crawdads for 2007. Newman began his managing career in 2008 when he was named manager of the Oneonta Tigers.
