Russell van Niekerk was the only left-hander on South Africa's roster in the 2000 Olympics, their lone baseball Olympics appearance. After injuring his throwing hand, he was doubtful for the games.Consequently, he struggled to recover in time.He only pitched to two batters. Relieving Liall Mauritz with a 5-0 deficit to open the 8th against Japan, he allowed doubles to Shinnosuke Abe and Yukio Tanaka before being relieved by Brian Harrell.
