 Biographical Information
Pitcher Russ Meers served in the Pacific for the United States Navy during World War II.
Meers had his best season in the minors when he went 16-5 with a 3.91 ERA for the Nashville Volunteers of the Southern Association in 1941. In 1939, he set all-time Mountain State League records in strikeouts (297) and walks (191). Russ also was one of two managers for the Roanoke Rapids Jays of the class D Coastal Plains League in 1949.
For 31 years he worked for the Ford Motor Company, retiring in 1981 as manager of the parts distribution center at Atlanta, GA. He died following a brief illness on November 16, 1994 in Lancaster, PA.
