Rudy Jaramillo is currently the hitting coach for the Texas Rangers. He is the longest tenured hitting coach in the major leagues as he was hired in 1994.
As a player, Jaramillo played for Cliff Gustafson at the University of Texas before signing with the Rangers in 1973. He played four seasons in the minors for the Rangers but he never reached the major leagues.
Jaramillo returned to organized baseball as a minor league coach in 1983. He managed in the minors from 1984 to 1986. In 1986, he managed Juan Gonzalez and Dean Palmer at Sarasota. He was a roving instructor through the 1989 season.
In 1990, Art Howe took Jaramillo to Houston when he was named the Astros manager. Jaramillo served on Howe's coaching staff for four years. In 1994, he managed the Bend Rockies, and after that season, he took over as the Rangers hitting coach.
Jaramillo, who is bilingual, is credited with turning around the careers of aging players and for the development of Rangers all star second baseman Michael Young as well as Ivan Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, and Jeff Bagwell.
Jaramillo was elected to the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
