[edit] Biographical Information
Rube DeGroff played two seasons in the major leagues and was in professional baseball until 1917. He played for the Saugerties team in 1903, in the Hudson River League. Late in the season, he was traded to Kinston in the same league, and pitched in an exhibitiion game against the Cuban X-Giants. DeGroff lost 3-2 to Rube Foster. DeGroff went on to Rochester in 1904, and there is some speculation that he got the nickname "Rube" (he had previously been called "Art") because he pitched so well against Rube Foster.
