[edit] Biographical Information
Roy Smalley III had a 13-year major league career with four different teams. Smalley, primarily a shortstop, is the son of Roy Smalley Jr., and the nephew of former major league manager Gene Mauch.
Smalley was a first-round pick of the Texas Rangers in the January 1974 amateur draft and he made his major-league debut in April of 1975. During the 1975 campaign, Smalley served as the backup to regular shortstop Toby Harrah and hit .228. With Harrah entrenched at short, Smalley and three others were packaged in a six-player trade in June of 1976 with the Minnesota Twins that brought Bert Blyleven to Texas. The trade also united Smalley with Mauch, who had signed on to lead the Twins for the 1976 season.
