[edit] Biographical Information

Ron Brand was the primary catcher of the Montreal Expos in their inaugural season of 1969, after being selected from the Houston Astros in the expansion draft. He had b previously been the Astros' starter at catcher in 1965 and 1967. With the Expos, he was originally slated to be a back-up to John Bateman, a former teammate with the Astros, but Bateman was hurt early in the year and Brand hit well enough to keep the job for the remainder of the season, even though he had almost no power. Bateman got his starting job back in 1970 and Brand spent the next two seasons as a utility player, catching a a few games but mainly playing at shortstop, second base, third base and in the outfield. He made the Expos' team out of spring training in 1972 but was sent down at the end of April without having played in any game, and never made it back.

Overall, he hit .239 in 568 games in the majors over 8 seasons; he hit 3 homers, but none after 1965 and had a career slugging percentage of only .282.
