The Cincinnati Reds signed Rogelio Alvarez as an amateur free agent before the 1956 season. The 18 year old was sent to the Arizona-Mexico League Yuma Sun Sox for a 12-game stint and then moved to the Big State League Port Arthur Sea Hawks for the remainder of the season. His combined totals for the year gave him 94 games played, 348 at-bats and 106 base hits for a .314 batting average.

In 1960 Alvarez got his first taste of the major leagues when the Reds called him up at the tail end of the season and he appeared in three games. He was sent back to the minors and after having probably his best season in 1962 with the Pacific Coast League San Diego Padres where he hit .318 in 132 games, he was again called up to the Cincinnati club at the end of that season. He appeared in 14 games, getting 6 hits. This was to be his last time in the major leagues.

On November 24, 1962 the Reds traded Rogelio to the Washington Senators for Harry Bright. Alvarez spent the rest of his professional career in the minors, making the 1969 Mexican League Veracruz Eagle team his last stop.

Rogelio played 14 years of professional ball with 13 teams in 9 different leagues. He appeared in 1,706 games, went to bat 4,970 times, had 1,321 base hits, of which 226 where home runs and had a .279 lifetime batting average.
