The son of Ray Boone, the brother of Bob Boone, and the uncle of Bret Boone and Aaron Boone (and minor leaguer Matt Boone), outfielder/catcher Rod Boone was a big star at Stanford, setting records. Stanford named him its MVP in 1971, a year in which he pitched and played outfield.
He was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 35th round of the 1972 amateur draft and played four years in the minors. Boone debuted with the Waterloo Royals and hit .261/~.362/.425. He pitched one game, allowing one run in two innings; it was his sole mound appearance as a pro. In 1973, Boone batted .246/~.333/.411 with the San Jose Bees; he drew 61 walks and hit 11 home runs. He had 36 passed balls, leading California League catchers.
In 1974, Boone hit .245/~.331/.402 for the Jacksonville Suns. He cut his passed ball total down by 30 but his 18 errors led Southern League backstops. In his final season, Rod played for the Iowa Oaks (.191/~.288/.304 in his only 16 games at AAA) and the Columbus Astros (.249/~.329/.336 in 68 games).
After his baseball days, he returned to Stanford to get his civil engineering degree.
