The son of coaching legend Gary Ward, third baseman/catcher Rocky Ward played under his father at Oklahoma State University from 1986 to 1988. He was the head baseball coach at New Mexico State University from 1997 to 2000. His father took over as the team's coach in 2001 and 2002, and Rocky remained on the staff as an assistant. He began a second stint as head coach in 2003.
