Ralph Wheeler

[edit] Biographical Information

Infielder Rocket Wheeler was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1977 amateur draft. He hit .312 for the Florence Blue Jays with a career-high 8 home runs in 1982, his final season as a player. A shortstop, he was known for his scrappiness, aggressive baserunning and capacity to use every drop of his playing talent.

He began his managerial career with the GCL Blue Jays in 1985. He managed the Medicine Hat Blue Jays in 1988 and 1989, going a combined 35-104 in the 2 years including the worst record in Pioneer League history in 1988 (12-58). He next managed the GCL Blue Jays in 1995, moved up to the St. Catharines Stompers in 1996-1997, the Dunedin Blue Jays in 1998-1999, and the Tennessee Smokies in 2000-2002. Wheeler managed the Rome Braves 2003-2005. He is currently the manager of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, where he works with hitting coach Franklin Stubbs.
