[edit] Biographical Information
The brother of Mickey Mahler, pitcher Rick Mahler was signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Braves and scout Al LaMacchia on June 16, 1975. He was the Opening Day starter five times for the Braves. He set a National League record when he threw three consecutive Opening Day shutouts from 1985 to 1987. He had previously thrown a shutout on opening day in 1982.
He had 15 Losses Seasons 3 times (1985, 1986 and 1988) and led the league in losses in the 1986 NL with 18.
After his playing career, he was a minor league manager and pitching coach. He was the pitching coach for the 1999 Kane County Cougars.
Mahler died of a heart attack at age 51 during spring training 2005. He was a minor league pitching coach for the New York Mets at the time of his death.
