Rick Jones has been a long-time college coach, winning over 900 games.

Jones taught and coaching in the Chatham County schools for three years after college. He then coached at E.E. Smith High School. He moved into the college ranks in 1982 with Ferrum College and was 102-34-1 in 3 seasons there. From 1985-1989, he coached Elon College to a 174-61 record, setting a school record for winning percentage and going to the NAIA College World Series three times (1985, 1987, and 1989). He was named NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1989.

Jones was assistant coach in charge of pitching and recruiting at Georgia Tech from 1990-1993. He helped recruit Nomar Garciaparra and Jay Payton. He also coached for Team USA in the 1990 Goodwill Games.

Jones then became head coach at Tulane University, where he has been from 1994 through the present (as of 2009). He has guided his team to the 2001 College World Series and 2005 College World Series, setting a Tulane record with 56 wins each year. Baseball America named him National Coach of the Year in 2005.

Jones managed Team USA's college edition in 2009, but there were no major international tournaments that year; the US won the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, Canada, their main event of the year.
