Rick Hirtensteiner played at Pepperdine University from 1986 to 1989, earning all-WCC honors three times and Baseball America All-American status in 1989. In the 1987 Pan American Games, he hit .409 and stole five bases, the most in the tournament. He was drafted in the 8th round of the 1989 amateur draft by the California Angels.

Hirtensteiner played in the minors from 1989 to 1995 for various organizations, leading the 1991 Pioneer League in runs, hits, total bases, triples, home runs, runs batted in, slugging percentage, and finishing 5th in batting average for the independent Salt Lake City Trappers.

Hirtensteiner was an assistant coach at Lamar University in 1996-1997 and at Pepperdine from 1997 to 1998 and 2000 to the present (as of 2014).
