Rich Hill played amateur baseball with the Al Thomas Club of the Yawkey Baseball League in Boston, MA. He played for Chatham in the Cape Cod League.
Hill was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 4th round of the 2002 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Scott May and made his pro debut that summer. In 351 minor league innings pitched from 2002 to 2005, he struck out 491, or 12.6 per 9 IP. After one outing with Single A Peoria in 2005, he made the jump to AA West Tennessee.
