The brother of Reinaldo Sato, Renan Sato has played for the Brazilian national team.
Sato played for Brazil in the 2001 Junior Pan American Games, hitting .419 and slugging .806. Among those he outhit was the tourney MVP, Kendry Morales. Sato failed to make the All-Tournament Team; Yulieski Gourriel was chosen at second base.
In 2001, Sato came to Japan to play in the industrial leagues. He works for Mitsubishi and plays on their industrial league squad. He hit .353/.421/.842 with 6 RBI in four games as Brazil's second baseman in the 2002 Intercontinental Cup. In the 2003 Baseball World Cup, his brother was on the team at second base, so Renan moved to first base. He batted .161/.297/.387 only as one of the few disappointments on a surprisingly successful 7th place team in its first Baseball World Cup. He played for Brazil in the 2003 Pan American Games. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, Sato replaced his brother as one of the team's leading offensive threats, hitting .375/.400/.625 at DH with 9 RBI in eight games. Only Tiago Magalhães outhit him. He was a double shy of the cycle in a game against China. Sato did not make the tournament All-Star team as Canada's DH Joey Votto put on an even brighter show. In the 2007 Pan American Games, he was just 2 for 12, albeit with a run and two RBI.
