In a 1936 interview in The Sporting News, Dooin claimed he was the first catcher in the majors to use shin guards. He claimed he wore them under his stockings. The shin guards, made of rattan, were designed by Mike Murphy, famous University of Pennsylvania athletic trainer.
As of 2007, Dooin is tied for 6th in the Modern Era with Frankie Hayes with 139 passed balls.
