[edit] Biographical Information
"Martin seemed to have them baffled." - manager Billy Southworth of the Braves, about his pitcher's performance in 1947 in beating the 1947 Dodgers who were in their way to winning the National League championship
Ray Martin's major league career consisted of three cups of coffee, of which two were excellent.
When he broke in during the 1943 season, he was 18 years old and one of the youngest players in the league. Although he gave up 3 runs in 3.3 innings, it was on the strength of only 3 hits and one walk.
When he came back in 1947, he appeared in one game, pitching 9 innings, and giving up only one run for an ERA of 1.00. He improved on that in 1948, appearing in two games and giving up no runs or hits.
As a result, his major league ERA, overall, is 2.45.
A detailed biography can be found here: Ray Martin. When Martin came to the majors, he had just come off a high school team that had won the Massachusetts state championship. He was a star pitcher and strikeout artist. He was in the military by July 1943, and did some pitching while in the Army. He pitched in the minors through 1951, and after that was mostly employed selling medical supplies.
