Randy Niemann pitched three complete games and two shutouts in seven starts as a rookie with the 1979 Houston Astros. This flash of brilliance did not foreshadow his major league career, as he only made three more starts the rest of his career. He was a member of the bullpen of the World Champion 1986 New York Mets but did not appear in the postseason.
In 1989, he played for the St. Lucie Legends of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He appeared in 4 games for the club and had an 11.42 ERA.
