[edit] Biographical Information

Ralph Hamner pitched for both Chicago major league teams in the 1940's, beginning at the age of 29 1/2.

During World War II he was on the baseball team at Norfolk Naval Air Station, along with Pee Wee Reese and other major leaguers.

When he broke in with the 1946 White Sox, 45-year-old Ted Lyons was also on the pitching staff in his last year as a player with the White Sox, and managed the team most of the year. The 39-year-old Luke Appling was still playing shortstop regularly and would do so for several more years.

With the 1947 Chicago Cubs, Hamner was the same age as Phil Cavarretta.

There have been three major leaguers with the last name Hamner, and all three made their major league debut in the period 1944-46.
