Ralph Brickner a 6'3" right-hander was signed out of Indiana University by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1948. He was sent to the Terre Haute Phillies of the Three-I League for his first season and responded with a 8-9 record and a 3.63 ERA.
Ralph would spend the next two seasons with the Utica Blue Sox, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Portsmouth Cubs before being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 1950 minor league draft. He would spend 1951 with the Birmingham Barons where he went 15-9 and earned a chance with the 1952 Red Sox.
Ralph pitched well in his only big league season, with a record of 3-1 with one save and an ERA of 2.18 in 14 games. He spent portions of the year with the AAA Louisville Colonels where he had a 2-2 record with a 2.37 ERA.
He spent his sixth and last season in pro ball with the 1953 Louisville squad, winning 4 and losing 4 with a 4.74 ERA, when arm trouble caused him to leave the game. Brickner's career minor league stats show he appeared in 138 games winning 47 and losing 40, pitching 761 innings, giving up 829 base hits and 198 base on balls for a 4.34 ERA.
Ralph was with the Hamilton, Ohio County Traffic Court for 25 years, the last 15 as head cashier, in his native Cincinnati, before retiring in the 1980s. He died on May 9, 1994, at age 69 in Port Jefferson, NY.
