[edit] Biographical Information
Ralph "Commy" Comstock pitched three years in the majors. He was in three leagues, with four teams, during that time.
Comstock was born in Sylvania, OH and got his start in pro ball at age 17 in the Ohio State League. He played nine seasons in the minors, posting a record of 86-60.
He made his major league debut with the 1913 Detroit Tigers at age 22. He was four years younger than teammate Ty Cobb.
He came up for three games with the 1915 Boston Red Sox, a team which also featured the 20-year-old Babe Ruth. Comstock had a decent ERA of 2.00 but was sold in mid-season to the 1915 Cincinnati Reds. He then jumped to the 1915 Federal League and appeared in 12 games, going 3-3 for the 1915 Pittsburgh Rebels. He was 24 years old, pretty young on a team whose average age was nearly 30.
In 1915 he spent some time with Providence, going 15-6. A teammate was the 21-year-old Herb Pennock who went 6-4.
Three years later he was back in Pittsburgh, only this time in the 1918 National League with the 1918 Pittsburgh Pirates. He was the same age at teammate Casey Stengel.
