R.C. Stevens played four seasons in the big leagues, making a notable debut with the 1958 Pittsburgh Pirates when he slugged .556 in 90 at-bats.
He was working in construction when discovered in 1952. He first played in Canada for a couple years and then in Burlington, NC where he endured racism. After that he played in Hollywood for three seasons.
Stevens retired after the 1961 season. Since he was friends with Gene Baker, who had been born in Davenport, IA, he and his wife moved to Davenport and built a house next door to Baker's. Forty-five years later he still lived there. He worked for Ametek for many years and then for many more years drove a bus for the city of Davenport.
