 Biographical Information
Quilvio Veras was an under-sized but speedy second baseman who broke into the big leagues in 1995 with the Florida Marlins and led the National League in both stolen bases and caught stealing that year. That rookie season was the best of Veras's career, and he finished third in an impressive Rookie of the Year Award race behind Hideo Nomo and Chipper Jones. Veras was injured and only played in 73 games in 1996 before being traded to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Dustin Hermanson.
Veras spent three seasons with the Padres posting solid but unspectacular numbers at the top of the lineup. He is best known for being the lead-off hitter for the 1998 Padres team which advanced to the World Series before losing to the New York Yankees. With the Padres Veras stole a total of 97 bases in the course of his three seasons, but continued to do so with a low conversion rate, finishing in the Top 10 in caught stealing twice in those three seasons.
Following the 1999 season the Padres traded Veras to the Atlanta Braves as a part of the deal which brought Ryan Klesko to San Diego. Veras started out well in Atlanta, on pace to have the best season of his career in 2000 with career-high numbers in batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage in addition to 25 stolen bases, but missed the second half of the season due to injury.
Veras was also injured in his second and final season with the Braves in 2001, though his numbers weren't nearly as good as they were in 2000. He finished his career in Atlanta playing just 155 games over his two seasons, as the Braves released him in early in August to make room in the lineup for a young Marcus Giles. Veras caught on with the Boston Red Sox, but only played in three minor league games. That was the last time Veras would appear in organized baseball.
