[edit] Biographical Information

Pug Bennett, as a 32-year-old rookie with the 1906 St. Louis Cardinals, led the National League with 595 at-bats. He was the only player on the team who appeared in more than 100 games (he was in 153). The Cardinals were not a very good team, and although Bennett had nearly 600 at-bats, he scored only 62 runs, mainly because people behind him weren't driving him in. The team had a batting average of .235 and a slugging percentage of .296.

Bennett's major league career ended when he did not hit as well in 1907.

Bennett, however, had a long career apart from the majors. He is the only major leaguer to come out of Blackburn College, where he attended in 1897, and in 1898-99 he played for Matton. In 1900 he was with the Toledo Mud Hens.

By 1905 he was with Seattle, and came up to the majors in 1906. After his major league days he played and managed for many years in the Nebraska State League and the Northwestern League.
