Preston Hanna won 17 games over eight seasons in the majors, primarily with the Atlanta Braves. His career was slowed by arm injuries.
The first round pick of the Atlanta Braves in the June 1972 amateur draft, Hanna went 11-6 with a 3.45 ERA for the Savannah Braves in 1974. After winning 10 games for the Richmond Braves in 1975, he made his major league debut for Atlanta that September. He split the 1977 season between the Braves bullpen and rotation and was almost exclusively used as a starter in 1978. He began the '78 campaign by going 6-1 through June, but he trailed off, losing 12 of his last 13 decisions and his last 8 straight. He then spent the remainder of his career primarily pitching in relief.
Released by Atlanta midway through the 1982 season, Hanna was signed by the Oakland Athletics. He pitched the final 23 games of his big league career for them in 1982 and played briefly in their chain the next year before ending his career in the Philadelphia Phillies chain.
Hanna's son Warren played in the Chicago Cubs organization in 2001 and 2002.
