[edit] Biographical Information

Catcher Pop Tate played six seasons in the major leagues. He twice had over 200 at-bats in a season, and in both those years is listed as the team regular at catcher.

Not a strong hitter, Tate earned his keep by playing what was at the time a tough defensive position.

The book Baseball in Richmond has a photo of him and calls him "a local baseball icon". He played catcher for several Richmond teams and years later, in 1926, the Richmond club's ballfield was renamed "Tate Field" in his honor. The book says his major league career ended when his throwing arm "became glassy".
