[edit] Biographical Information
Outfielder John "Pop" Corkhill played ten seasons in the majors, mostly in the American Association with the Cincinnati Red Stockings. He hit over .300 once, in 1887. Previously, in 1886, he had been second in the league in RBI.
Corkhill appeared in 17 games as a pitcher, going 3-4 with 2 saves. He also played occasionally everywhere else except for catcher.
A SABR article chose Corkhill as one of the three top outfielders for the 1880s in the American Association.
Corkhill made news before he ever played a major league game. He signed in 1882 with both Baltimore and Cincinnati, and the resulting situation made the newspapers; a buyout had to be arranged.
