After 54 years without minor league baseball in town, Kannapolis, NC returned to the pro baseball world in 1995 when a team moved from Spartanburg, SC and became the Piedmont Phillies. The club played in the South Atlantic League. Managed by Roy Majtyka, the team went 82-58, the second-best mark in the 14-team circuit. The team lost in the title game to the Augusta Green Jackets. The big star was pitcher Larry Wimberly (10-3, 2.67), who was voted as one of the league's top prospects and named as the lefty pitcher on the league All-Star team. The next season the team was renamed the Piedmont Boll Weevils.
