Phil Stephenson was signed as a 3rd round pick in the 1982 amateur draft by the Oakland A's and scouts Del Wilber and Gary Wiencek.
Stephenson was named Baseball America's 1988-89 winter league player of the year while playing for the Zulia Aguilas. He was named MVP of the Venezuelan League and led the league with 9 home runs and 42 RBI. He nearly won the triple crown but his .318 batting average was second to Carlos Martinez's .331. He also batted .385 with 3 home runs and seven RBI during the Caribbean Series and was named the tournament's MVP.
Phil is the brother of Gene Stephenson, his coach in college.
Stephenson and Ted Power are the only two major leaguers (through 2007) born in Guthrie, OK.
He holds the NCAA record for most career stolen bases.
