Pitcher Phil Dumatrait was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2000 amateur draft. In 2003, he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for Scott Williamson. He made his Major League debut with the Reds on August 2, 2007, allowing 6 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings in a losing start against the Washington Nationals.

In the first game in major league history to start with three home runs, Dumatrait was the pitcher for the Reds against the Milwaukee Brewers on September 9, 2007 (Boxscore). The three hitters who connected against him were Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy and Ryan Braun. He was removed after throwing just 12 pitches to five batters; he gave up two singles after the three homers. That performance brought his season's ERA to 15.00. Two other teams had hit home runs in their first three at bats previously, but both times this had been in the bottom of the first inning.

Following the 2007 season, Dumatrait was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
