Pete Varney, out of Harvard University, was a catcher for four years in the majors. He was with the Chicago White Sox in the Dick Allen days, backing up Ed Herrmann and later Brian Downing at catcher.
- Caught the two point conversion in the 1968 Harvard-Yale game, a 29-29 tie.
- Strange distinction of being drafted 7 times [1] before finally signing with the Chicago White Sox.
- A backup catcher in the 70s for the Chicago White Sox. Often backed up Brian Downing.
- 2nd career start was vs New York Yankees on August 16, 1974 at Shea Stadium.
- Has been the Head Baseball Coach at Brandeis University since 1982.
- Vice President of the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association.
- Coached major league pitcher Nelson Figueroa at Brandeis as well as Jim Deschaine of the class AA Reading Phillies.
