[edit] Biographical Information
Pete Conway went 61-61 as a pitcher in his four years in the majors, posting a record of 30-14 in 1888. He played mostly for the Detroit Wolverines, a team which featured some famous players and which won the equivalent of the World Series in 1887. Conway also appeared in 44 games as an outfielder and had his best year as a hitter in 1888 when he hit .275 in a league which hit .239.
In one game in 1887, John Clarkson homered off Conway and Conway homered off Clarkson.
Conway, who broke in when he was 18, was finished with the big leagues before he turned 23.
The book Baseball at the University of Michigan indicates that Conway's career ended because of arm problems. He became Michigan's first official baseball coach in 1891 and continued in 1892.
He is one of nine major leaguers with the last name "Conway" (through 2008). Four of them played during the 1880s.
