Second baseman Perry Hill played with Rio Grande Valley in the Gulf States League in 1976 and hit only .194 in his only OB playing experience. After more than a decade as a big league coach, Hill retired in spring 2007. After the 2008 season, he was hired by the Pittsburgh Pirates to fill the vacant first base coach job. He held the job for one year and was noted for the improved fielding of 3B Andy LaRoche, who Hill worked with, but left the team after 2009 to spend some time away from baseball.
