The Pensacola Pelicans began play in the independent Southeastern League in 2002 and captured the circuit's first title. They posted the league's best regular-season record the following year but were defeated by the Baton Rouge Riverbats in the championship series. In 2004, they joined the Central Baseball League. They made the playoffs that year and again in 2005. In 2006, they changed leagues again when they joined the newly formed American Association. The Pelicans play at Pelican Park in Pensacola, FL.
